Former Member of Parliament Stephen Woodworth, with a delegation from The Democracy Defence Initiative, will deliver an Open Letter to the offices of several B.C. Law Society Benchers each weekday from now until May 9, 2017 at 4:30 p.m. to support freedom of association and freedom of belief, and to protest the treatment of members of the Trinity Western University church community by the Law Society of British Columbia. The delegation will remain outside each office for one hour to distribute the letter publicly.
The letter urges the Law Society accept the resounding and unanimous defence of freedom issued by the B.C. Court of Appeal and to cause the B.C. Law Society to withdraw its appeal against the Court’s Trinity Western University decision.
“In 1948 wise leaders declared in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that “Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion…”. These were not just empty words but a sturdy foundation for civilized democracy, purchased with blood. It is outrageous to now cast the aside these ideals.” said Woodworth, describing the planned event. Referring to the Law Society’s appeal of the B.C. Appeal Court decision, he added “Punishing any citizen for their peaceful beliefs or their religious affiliation is simply outrageous. When was any authority in Canada given that power?”
